The Sinking Kansai International Airport (KIA)

Kansai International Airport is one of the ten marvellous engineering civil structure in the 20th century. It’s completely built on the artificial island, 3 mile from shore, promoting economic development and avoiding residential problems such as great noise and relocation. However, since it was built, it’ seems to be doomed to sink to the sea. Especially in the current era, the fate of KIA is more uncertain, under the global climate evolution. To investigate more money on maintenance, or just leave it as it is, it’s a serious question.

Three Gorges Dam

To solve the flooding issue of the Yangtze River, a hydroelectric gravity dam project is proposed, which spans the river by the town of Sandouping, in Yiling District, Yichang, Hubei province, central China, downstream of the Three Gorges. The Three Gorges Dam is also the world’s largest power station in terms of installed capacity. Nevertheless, its impact on the biodiversity, forestation, and human habitats are nowhere to be neglected.

Train to Nowhere? California High-Speed Rail (CAHSR)

High-speed railway is now gaining more and more popularity around the world but USA seems to fall behind China and Europe in this revolution. Lots of reasons like governmental structure and economic funding accounts for this lap. However, California maybe the first in USA to build a mature high-speed railway. This railway will not only bring convenience to people’s outing, but also greatly reduce the pollution, alleviating air quality issue in CA, but behind the construction process, the road to the railway is not easy.

Trump Wall – US. Mexico Border

The Trump Wall is an expansion of the Mexico-United States Barrier, built for inhibiting illegal crossing of migrants from South America. The discontinuous wall stretches more than 450 miles on the continent, separating two countries with natural borders and virtual fence. However, not do whether the wall border actually reduce illegal migration is under question, but also there are other concerns with illegal drug trade, environmental influence, private property and the deported immigrants life.

Urban IFL Projects

Urban Integrated Field Laboratories are to be constructed in three U.S. cities through funding by the Department of Energy. These Urban IFL projects will aim to better understand the climate challenges affecting the designated areas and how to address climate adaptations while taking into account groups that have historically been underrepresented.

Valley Park Levee along the Meramec River

In recent years, the Meramec River has been experiencing historic flooding that may be exacerbated by the Valley Park levee that was built by the Army Corps of Engineers and protects an affluent community. Nearby communities who are less fortunate, experience frequent flooding where homes are routinely lost and rebuilt at the expense of lack of flood management in the area and the nearby levee being built on outdated models.

Willowtree Oil Drilling Project

In an attempt to stabalize energy market and boost domestic energy production, Biden administration decided to push forward the construction of willowtree oil drilling project. However, this approval is a betrayal of Biden’s stopping oil and gas drilling compaign promise and raises huge objection from public. The tension also lies within the Alaska residents, some think it would foster racial justice, by creating job opportunities and increasing revenues, while other concerns more about environmental impacts. Last but not the least, there’s debate over the environmental consequences of the project itself: will it actually lead to more emission?
